Our Story
Coachella Valley Yarn exists because I believe in the power of craft to give meaning, comfort, joy, and healing to a person’s life and community. After learning to knit and sew at the age of eight and weave at the age of 14, I got busy with other aspects of life. I would knit a project when I was on vacation. I collected yarn. Then, in 2016, I picked up the needles to knit many pink hats because women needed to be seen, heard, and respected. And I connected with a community through Craftivism. In 2020, I warped a loom and wove a scarf to keep a rhythm in my life when all the rhythms were stopped – to keep me sane during the pandemic. I learned to process wool from sheep to garment because. As an environmentalist, I saw a path to personally make a difference – through my clothing – that made sense to me and connected me to the rhythms of the seasons and the seasons of life.
Working with fiber can be healing. It can heal the person and it can heal the planet. It can also bring joy and facilitate self-expression. By making conscious choices about the materials we use to craft and pursuing these slow and intentional creations, we can reduce the extractive and wasteful nature of fashion and furnishings while increasing our agency. We can support people and organizations that are purposefully lifting overlooked and under-resourced communities. We can be connected to where our fiber comes from and the impact it has on our ecosystem
I want my customers/friends to feel as though they have been transported to a magical realm that delights all of their senses and makes them feel that anything is possible, that they can create whatever their heart desires, because this place exists for them to bring their dreams to life. It is a safe space, judgment-free, welcoming, and a bit whimsical. They are among friends who share their passion and interests in “all things fiber,” even if they are just discovering this passion! There is a bit of a sense of humor because things don’t always turn out perfectly. There is joy and meaning in the process as much as the final product. Anything can happen in a magical place like the desert!
